What is Systemic and Family Constellations Therapy?
Systemic and Family Constellations Therapy is a form of healing that originated from the Zulu tribe of South Africa. The Zulus regarded their connection to their ancestors as a focal point of their belief system and way of life. This connection created a platform within which profound healing and transformation could occur. Restoring the flow of love within our lineage opens us up to inheriting gifts and talents from our ancestors, negating the need to connect in more destructive ways, namely generational trauma and cycles of repeating patterns within our lives and family systems. Restoring the order of love paves the way for us to walk our own path, in honor of those who came before us.
Bert Hellinger who is arguably the most notable practitioner of Systemic Constellations and Family Constellations Therapy, was a Catholic Priest of German origin who lived in South Africa for 16 years, sent there as a missionary to the Zulus. In his time there, he found himself immersed in the language, culture and rituals of the Zulu. The profound experiences he had within the wisdom of the Zulu tribe helped him reconcile his own traumas and experiences he had lived through during WW2. According to Hellinger, a pivotal moment in the field is when he came to question “Of people and ideals, which do you value the most. Which would you sacrifice for the other?”.
This is the crux of my approach to constellation therapy; the reconciliation of opposing ideals within our lineage, but really at the core of it within ourselves. The soul speaks an entirely different language from the body and the intellectual mind, that is buried so deep within the subconscious that more often that not our minds have no awareness of the soul’s desire to bond and belong and create balance within our lineage- even when the conscious mind is working in the opposite direction. In a constellation we bring to light the underlying language of the soul and morphogenetic field we all belong to, and create a resolution that helps you unburden yourself of you doesn’t belong to you, so you may go on to walk your own path.
There isn’t an aspect of life that doesn’t tie back to this common thread of bonding and belonging, its embedded in our DNA. Birth, death and everything in between; our relationship with our parents, food, money, career, love, divorce.
